Huge Sigh…

So, I tried installing the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and its bin via the Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu, both versions 5 and 6, and via the Terminal too. Holy shit. Why are all the JRE packages erroneous? It's just not fair, especially since I have to download the damn thing from the Java website and put it on via terminal.

i am especially bad at terminal. It took me a long time to figure out that after you type su <username> and it prompts you for a password, your keyboard is not actually broken - there are no asterisks, it's just an extra security measure.

I have no idea about the system setup either. For example, after you login in Terminal with a super-user account, you've gotta install said programme in a folder. What folder? /usr/local/? Where's that? /usr/java/ Not found. What? Where do I put it?

I like that you have to change file permissions (via Terminal of course) to run an executable file. I like that it's a security measure but I HATE how hard it is. Oh Jesus. And also, I need to get Audacity on here so I can record a show or two.

Should I figure out how to get JRE and the like on here, I'll bust my ass to back up the 7-8 gigs of music I have and run it as a dual boot. Or maybe I won't back them up at all.

Firefox is also much faster here. Believe it or not, it's not crashed at all.

The theme and fonts are also gorgeous.

YES YES YES!!! THANK YOU G-D!!

Guess WHAT?

I got Internet running on my live copy of Ubuntu. You don't actually need the non-existent Device Manager for a Windows Driver. Well, you might, but I didn't. I followed the necessary steps, and instead of installing the most logical driver with the inf file extension, I installed them all. The second driver recognised my wireless adapter, and I went from there in setting up the network. I set up both Wireless and Wired connections, and voila, it's done and up. I don't have a password on my network, so I left it blank and didn't change the network type, and it still works. Awesome!

So, yeah, I'm really proud of myself. I also noticed a dramatic increase in speed in memory, CPU cycles, and internet. On Windows, I usually push ~ 600 MB with a Firefox with 3 tabs, a few chat windows, email, and a Notepad. I currently have all those and more running, and the memory is cut in half. Also on Windows, my CPU usage was never less than 100%, but as I type this it's around the neighbourhood of 15%. I took this screencap a while ago of the System Monitor, and you can see for yourself, it's not much different that what I typed right now.

System Monitor in Ubuntu

If this keeps up, I will make it my primary OS.

I’ve Decided…

....That instead of getting a really expensive yet lovely Mac, or getting a really affordable yet ugly Windows Vista on a Dell laptop, I will combine both options by getting a beautiful, lovely and affordable Dell laptop with the Ubuntu OS pre-installed. It'll be about $626, as opposed to my ideal MacBook, which is a whopping $1,299! I don't like all the hype around Macs, and plus, I love open source. Love
love LOVE it. EE is sort of open source, in that when you buy a licence you get all the source code. I agree with that idea much more. If there was some sort of big security risk in EE and some user caught it before the official dev team did, I'm pretty sure they'd take it.

OK, well, I need to get to bed, because I have work tomorrow. If I work
my usual schedule, I can get my Dell before school starts. I make about $180 a week. It frustrates me that they won't let me work at least one other day, but I get the recession thing. I applied for a job at
Wal*Mart and sold my socialist soul to the capitalist devil. But, hopefully, I can make $500 in addition to the laptop money, so I can
have some play money for the year.

I'm totally stoked for getting Ubuntu. I tried it a few years back, it
is AMAZING with the exception that too many drivers on here just don't mesh with it. Hopefully buying my own computer with all the crap I want will fix that. I know I've said over and over again I want more than a
gig of RAM, but it makes the difference between getting it before OSD starts and not. I will probably ask for more RAM for my birthday and a cheque. I always get at least 100 bucks.

Also, a book I wholly recommend is The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Clayton. It's a girly book, but not in the traditional romance-breakup/best friend=love/men suck sort of way. I was
disappointed that there were no male reviews on the back cover, because from what I've read - which isn't much, only 2 chapters - it doesn't
seem like a vomit-inducing book. I believe Barnes & Noble still has
it on sale; that's where I got it, and it was about 19 dollars.

A heads-up for anyone longing to expand their Jewish library: ArtScroll is having a sale a week until the end of the Summer with various hot
items on sale. This week they have the 3-volume slipcased Interlinear Siddurim, which I highly recommend. Rashi's commentaries on the Torah is also on sale. I bought The Shabbos Companion volumes 1 and 2 and they should be arriving next week (hopefully before Shabbos!).
I might get Perkei Avos, or might ask for it for my birthday. I do need
to buy a Chumash or Tanakh soon, but will do it off Amazon, since it's loads cheaper (even with the discount). I am hoping that next week they'll put Chofetz Chaim on sale, but it will probably be cheaper off Amazon again anyways. Anything that isn't on Amazon or is actually cheaper on ArtScroll.com, I buy from the original seller.

OK, now I really need to get to bed - Shavuah Tov everyone!
